May 18, 2020 (ATLANTA, GA) --- Tom Barrow Company is pleased to announce it offers a solution to increase space disinfection through a system which combines Ultraviolet lights and high-volume, low-speed (HVLS) fans. “Upper-room Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) fixtures have been used in hospital and other medical settings for a long time,” states Mike Shea, President, Tom Barrow Company. “Our system adds HVLS fans to increase the disinfection system effectiveness. Our system also takes the concept from a medical application to any facility where there is a need for disinfection.”

The system of HVLS fans and upper-air UVGI fixtures can be used in a broad range of spaces, including building entrance lobbies, elevator lobbies, cafeterias, K-12 school common areas, cafeterias, gyms and locker rooms; and in hospitals lobbies, waiting areas and common areas. Larger spaces that have 12’ or higher ceilings and foot traffic are the best application.

“The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) recommends the application of upper-air (upper-room) UVGI devices to control the transmission of airborne pathogens,” shares Shea. “Additionally, ASHRAE states that the overall effectiveness of upper-air UVC systems improves significantly when the air in a space can be well mixed.”

The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) published an IES Committee Report in April 2020 in response to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. The report recommends the use of upper-room Germicidal UV (GUV) with air mixing.

CDC and NIOSH have also recommended the use of Upper-Room UVGI and air mixing as a control measure for air disinfection in healthcare facilities.

The combination of HVLS fans moving large volumes of air at a low speed and upper-air UVGI fixtures can help reduce airborne pathogens. Computation Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations predicting airflow patterns to maximize the amount of exposure to a UVGI upper-air (upper-room) fixture are available through company representatives.

Tom Barrow Company represents UV products and is also the sole selling representative for Big Ass Fans™ HVLS fan products in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee. The company works with engineers, architects, contractors, and owners to identify the products and solutions that best fit each specific application.
